The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) urges immediate preparation for the challenging air traffic peak

The air cargo industry urges the government and stakeholders to prepare for the upcoming high challenge air cargo season.

The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) said yesterday that the industry faced "unprecedented challenges" in the fourth quarter, and demand could easily exceed supply.

Tiyaka said that port congestion, delay and rising shipping costs are turning desperate shippers to air transport. Tiyaka said that, combined with online shopping activities and traditional peaks, "system pressure is expected to increase significantly".

It urged the industry to be prepared, particularly in the face of labour constraints associated with Covid, particularly in Asia.

"Such restrictions lead to the payment of goods between neighbouring countries and airports, posing further challenges. Therefore, we encourage shippers to work with freight forwarding partners to ensure the required capacity as early as possible in the cycle."

Whether there is any available capacity is still a controversial issue. For example, Atlas Airlines said in its latest financial report conference call that it has reserved 5% of the transportation capacity for the spot market. Others said that companies must be creative to gain capacity.

Steve Manser, a charter specialist at Hunt&Palmer, said: "The charter rate is very high, and the capacity is very high - you need to be resourceful to find solutions for customers, including passenger aircraft capacity."

One consultant said that the rate in the next two months would be "unstable". For example, the rate from China to the United Kingdom had more than doubled in the past month, reaching more than $9 per kilogram, while another quoted $15 per kilogram in Hong Kong. A source said that an airline's 747 cargo plane charged about 25000 dollars per hour.

TIACA not only urges air cargo customers to plan as soon as possible, but also asks the government to help alleviate this situation.

"Governments are urged to quickly follow up on temporary concessions and consider supporting the ongoing implementation of the Seventh Freedom System.

"Countries are also urged to work with industry representatives to identify potential systemic barriers in advance so that they can be addressed before they further affect the supply chain. Supply chain disruptions have occurred in some markets and are expected to worsen."

The increasing number of passengers means that some passenger cargo ships have left the market, but most of them are now on domestic or tourist routes, minimizing the use of abdomen.

TIACA said that the industry also needs to take action and "urgently adopt efficiency tools such as enhanced data sharing".

"Emergency plans must be developed to deal with all possible possibilities. The key to success is planning and communication."

Steven Polmans, President of TIACA, said: "Planning must start now, and resources and capacity, processing and facility space, delivery and drivers will become problems. We should be proud of the innovative, agile and flexible methods adopted by the industry in the past 18 months. Now we must also be proactive in addressing these new challenges, because the pressure of customer expectations is growing."
